About this place
Satta Pass is a mountain pass in Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka, Shizuoka Prefecture. On the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, it lies between Yui-juku and Okitsu-juku. According to tradition, the name derives from the story that in the Kamakura period a stone Buddha of Jizo (= Jizo Bosatsu, Jizo Satta, Satta Jizo), caught in a fishing net on the coast of Yui Kurasawa, was enshrined at this place. It is also said that, seen from around Kambara on the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, it looks like a Kannon Bosatsu lying on its side (the 'reclining Kannon'). Because the place name is hard to read, it is sometimes written with the difficult character replaced by a simpler one or in kana.
