About this place
Joren Falls is a waterfall in Yugashima, Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is one of Japan's 100 Waterfalls. The falls are on the Hon-dani River, which flows on the northwest foot of Mount Amagi in the upper reaches of the Kano River, and are a straight plunge over a basalt lava flow that poured out when the Hachikubo-yama scoria cone of the Eastern Izu Volcano Group erupted 17,000 years ago. The drop is 25 m and the width 7 m, and columnar joints can be seen in the rock face. The plunge pool is 15 m deep. It is said the name Joren Falls came from a temple called Jorenji that once stood near the left bank of the falls.
