About this place

Kakegawa Castle was a Japanese castle at Kakegawa, Sano District, Totomi Province (Kakegawa, Kakegawa, Shizuoka Prefecture). In the Sengoku period, Kakegawa, as the center and base of eastern Totomi Province commanding the Tokaido, was often the stage of struggles for control. It is said to have been built by the Asahina clan on Ryuto-zan, on the north bank of the Sakagawa River, and the basic parts of the castle structure seen today were made by Yamauchi Kazutoyo, who entered the site in the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
