About this place
Izusan Jinja (read Izusan-jinja or Izuyama-jinja) is a shrine in Izusan, Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is the de facto head shrine from which the Izusan shrines, Izu shrines, Soto shrines (Soto-jinja, Hashiriyu-jinja), and others scattered across the country originated. It is said that Minamoto no Yoritomo, exiled to Izu Province, prayed here for the revival of the Genji clan; he held it in deep reverence, and it is also said to have been the place where Yoritomo and his wife Hojo Masako met.
