About this place
Itaibara Shuraku is a mountain village settlement in Chizu, Yazu District, Tottori Prefecture. It is a prefecture-selected Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The settlement, sunk among the surrounding mountains such as Mt. Ushibuse and Mt. Kaijo, retains a legend of being a hidden village of Heike fugitives. It is a settlement in the mountains behind Mt. Ushibuse of Chizu-juku, through which the Chizu Orai passes, at an elevation of about 430 meters in the valley of the Itaibara River (Akanami River) in the Sendai River system, and prospered in the Edo period through agriculture and charcoal burning, and in the Meiji period through sericulture.
