About this place
Beppu Benten Pond is a pond in the grounds of Beppu Itsukushima Shrine at Oaza Beppu Mizukami, Akiyoshi-cho, Mine, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The water is about 4 meters deep and transparent to the pond bottom. It is part of the Akiyoshidai karst plateau, with spring water welling up from the bottom of a doline pond, and it appears cobalt blue or turquoise blue depending on the angle of sunlight. The groundwater welling up from the pond was selected in 1985 (Showa 60) among Japan's Top 100 Famous Waters as Beppu Benten Pond Spring Water. It is a geosite of the Mine Akiyoshidai Geopark.
