About this place
The Kanmon Tunnel is a National Route 2 tunnel (undersea tunnel) linking Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture. It opened in 1958 (Showa 33). To distinguish it from the tunnel of the same name on the Sanyo Main Line, it is sometimes called the Kanmon Kokudo Tunnel (Kanmon National Highway Tunnel). It was excavated below the surface of the Kanmon Strait and is a toll road tunnel managed by NEXCO West Japan Kyushu Branch. A pedestrian tunnel is also attached.
