Among the largest karst plateaus in Japan, white limestone scattered over grassland. One of Japan's three great karst areas.
About this place
Akiyoshidai is Japan's largest karst plateau, spreading across central and eastern Mine, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It extends about 16 km to the northeast and about 6 km to the northwest, with a total area on the plateau of 54 km2, a total area of limestone distribution (including latent parts beneath the alluvial surface) of 93 km2, and an elevation of the plateau surface of 180 - 420 m. It is divided by the Koto River into two plateaus, east and west (Higashidai and Nishidai), and the eastern area is Akiyoshidai in the narrow sense (Special Natural Monument, Quasi-National Park).
