Overview
The signature scenic site of Kita-Nagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park, a run of strange rocks and sea arches called the Alps of the sea.
About this place
Omijima (also read Oumijima) is an island in the Sea of Japan north of Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It has an area of 14 square kilometers and a circumference of about 40 kilometers. It is connected to the mainland, about 50 meters away at the narrowest point, by the Omi Ohashi Bridge, completed in 1965 (Showa 40). The island's highest point is Takayama, 319.9 meters, on the northeast side. Several small islands on the outer edge are connected by sandbars. The north coast of the island has erosional topography shaped by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan, and the sight of its strange rocks standing in rows is also called the 'Alps on the Sea.'
