A shrine to Emperor Antoku, who drowned at Dannoura, with a vermilion water gate modelled on the palace of the sea dragon.
About this place
Akama Jingu is a shrine in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Its former shrine rank was Kanpei Taisha. It enshrines Emperor Antoku, who drowned himself in the Battle of Dannoura.
Until the Edo period it was called Antoku Tenno Mieido and was enshrined in the Buddhist manner. It is also famous for the mound enshrining the Heike clan; its predecessor Amida-ji was the setting of 'Miminashi Hoichi' (Hoichi the Earless), but through the separation of Buddhism and Shinto (haibutsu kishaku) it became a shrine and remains so to the present.
