A keep pulled down under the one-castle-per-province law and later rebuilt, looking down from the summit on the Kintaikyo bridge and the town.
About this place
Iwakuni Castle was a Japanese castle (mountain castle) at Yokoyama, Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture. In the early Edo period it became the residence of the Iwakuni domain, and the mountain castle Yokoyama Castle had the main enclosure at its center, with the Ninomaru to the southwest, the Kitanomaru to the northeast, and other enclosures such as the Mizunote, and an 'Odoi' (earthen embankment) was built at the foot. The main enclosure had a four-tier, six-story keep and other structures, but after the castle was abolished the keep was demolished and the embankment survived as a jin'ya (administrative residence). The Kintai Bridge was built over the Nishiki River, which separates the castle town from the castle, creating a distinctive landscape.
