About this place
Shokasonjuku was a private academy that existed in Matsumoto Village in the castle town of Hagi, Choshu (now Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture), at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu). It is known for having produced many talents who led Japan from the Bakumatsu into the Meiji period, from among the students during the short time Shoin Yoshida taught there. In 1842 (Tenpo 13), Shoin's uncle, Bunnoshin Tamaki, opened a private school of one eight-mat room and named it Shokasonjuku, and the boy Shoin also entered it. Bunnoshin's teaching was extremely strict, and a story is handed down that Shoin was beaten for brushing away a mosquito that landed on his face during class.
