A saltwater pond in Hagi. Seawater enters and leaves through cracks in the rock with the tide, and sea fish live in it.
About this place
Myojin Pond is a pond in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Myojin Pond is a lagoon lake formed by lava and a sandbar between Mt. Kasa and the mainland; it connects to the open sea through gaps in the lava and is a brackish lake whose water level changes with the tides of the open sea. Because migratory fish such as mullet live there even though it is a pond, it was designated a National Natural Monument on December 9, 1924 (Taisho 13). The designation criterion relates to the habitat as 'animals or animal communities peculiar to the natural environment.'
