About this place
A shrine in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, known as the Ichinomiya of Nagato Province. Together with Sumiyoshi Taisha in Osaka and Sumiyoshi Shrine in Hakata, it is one of the Three Great Sumiyoshi of Japan. The main hall, a National Treasure, is built in the kukensha-nagare-zukuri style and was donated by Ouchi Hiroyo in the 3rd year of Oan (1370). The cypress-bark-roofed worship hall is an Important Cultural Property donated by Mori Motonari in the 8th year of Tenbun (1539).
