About this place
Soma Nomaoi is a festival of the three Myoken shrines, Soma Nakamura Shrine, Soma Ota Shrine and Soma Odaka Shrine, held in the northern part of the Hamadori region of Fukushima Prefecture (the former territory of the Soma clan, the Nakamura domain under the domain system), beginning with the Nakamura district of Soma, Fukushima Prefecture. It consists of Shinto rites including the Nomakake (chasing horses), the armored horse race and the sacred flag contest held at the Hibarigahara festival grounds in Haramachi Ward, Minamisoma, and the procession in which mounted warriors parade through the town. These rites were designated a nationally Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1952.
