About this place
Kiryu-ori is a silk fabric that is a specialty of Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture. Its origins go back to the Nara period. From the Edo period onward it developed by adopting techniques from Nishijin and the West, and it was also among the first to introduce manufacture (factory-based handicraft). Said to be "Nishijin in the west, Kiryu in the east," it flourished as a key industry of Japan, centered on high-grade fabrics, until the early Showa period.
