About this place
Omicho Market is a market in the central part of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. About 180 shops, including retail stores (mainly fresh food and other foodstuffs and household goods) and restaurants, form a shopping street. Its history began in Kyoho 6 (1721) in the Edo period, when it was the kitchen supplier to the Kaga domain, which ruled Kanazawa as its castle town. The name is said to derive from its creation by Omi merchants (there are several theories). In some areas it is affectionately called "Omicho." The Omicho Ichiba-kan opened on April 16, 2009, as part of an urban redevelopment project (described below).
