Iron is poured into sand moulds. The water is said to taste sweeter for it, and the ware now sells well abroad.
About this place
Nanbu ironware (Nanbu Tekki) is ironware made by member businesses of the Iwate Prefecture Nanbu Ironware Cooperative Association. There are 74 business establishments with an estimated 730 workers, and annual production is about 9.2 billion yen. On February 17, 1975 (Showa 50), it was designated a Traditional Craft Product by the Minister of International Trade and Industry (now designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry). The number of people certified and registered as Traditional Craftsmen is 72 as of fiscal 2021 (Reiwa 3). It is also registered as a regional collective trademark.
