About this place
Nora Dokei is a clock tower in Aki, Kochi Prefecture. It was made in the Meiji period and installed at the house of a local landowner. Standing in the countryside scenery almost at the centre of the Aki Plain, it is one of Aki's tourist attractions. It is a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Hatanaka Genma, a large landowner of Doi Village (now Doi, Aki), became interested in clocks. Around 1887 (Meiji 20), he ordered an American octagonal wall clock, repeatedly took it apart and put it back together, and eventually decided to make a clock of his own.
