Overview
A bathing place of the Date family, counted among the three imperial hot springs of Japan.
About this place
Akiu Onsen is a hot spring located in Yumoto, Akiu-machi, Taihaku Ward, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture (formerly Mutsu Province, and Rikuzen Province since the Meiji period). Because it is close to central Sendai, it is used not only for overnight stays but also for day-trip bathing. Together with Naruko Onsen, also in Miyagi Prefecture, and Iizaka Onsen in Fukushima Prefecture, it is counted as one of the Three Famous Hot Springs of Oshu. In ancient times it was called "Natori no Miyu" and was counted as one of Japan's Three Famous Hot Springs, alongside Arima Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture (Settsu Province) and Dogo Onsen in Ehime Prefecture (Iyo Province).
