On autumn mornings a sea of cloud fills the basin. A grandson of Emperor Jimmu is said to have surveyed the land from here.

Kunimigaoka is a hill in Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture, named for its fine views in all directions. It is also a famous place for seas of clouds. Kunimigaoka is a hill in Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture, at an elevation of 513 metres. It has fine views in all directions: to the east the Takachiho Basin (where the morning sun rises), to the far west the outer rim of Aso and the Five Peaks (which look like a reclining Buddha), to the north Mount Sobo and others, and to the south Shiiba Mountain, which continues from Mount Futagami.
