About this place
Gyokusendo is a limestone cave at Maekawa, Tamagusuku, Nanjo, Okinawa Prefecture. In the broad sense it refers to a group of caves over 5,000 metres in total length developed in the basin of the Oidoi River in southern Okinawa Island, and in the narrow sense to the Maekawa No. 6 Cave located within this cave group (cave system). In central and southern Okinawa Island, a stratum of Quaternary reef limestone (Ryukyu Group) is deposited over the Neogene mudstone (Shimajiri Group) that forms the bedrock, and many caves have formed in this area.
