About this place
Akiyoshidai is the largest karst plateau in Japan, spreading across the central and eastern parts of Mine, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It extends about 16 km to the northeast and about 6 km to the northwest, with a total plateau area of 54 km2, a total limestone distribution area (including latent parts beneath the alluvial surface) of 93 km2, and a plateau elevation of 180 to 420 m. It is divided by the Kuto River into two plateaus, east and west (Higashidai and Nishidai), and the eastern area is Akiyoshidai in the narrow sense (a Special Natural Monument and Quasi-National Park).
