One of the largest limestone caves in Japan, and the largest karst plateau.
About this place
Akiyoshido is a limestone cave 100 to 200 m beneath Akiyoshidai in eastern Mine, Yamaguchi Prefecture, open to the public along a tourist route of about 1 km. It is one of the largest limestone caves in Japan. An underground river flows for about 1 km from Kotogafuchi at the back of the cave to the cave mouth. In the diving survey from Kotogafuchi inward by cave explorers around 1990, it was found to connect to Kuzugaana about 2.5 km to the east, bringing the total length to 8,850 m.
