About this place
Karato Market is a local wholesale market in Karatocho, Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The market at Karato, once a transport hub and the centre of Shimonoseki, began in 1909 (Meiji 42) with the official permission to sell vegetables and fruit on the street. In 1924 (Taisho 13) the fish market moved from Amidajicho and 'Karato Fish Market' was launched, and in 1933 (Showa 8) the present Karato Market was opened as the 'Shimonoseki Karato Fish and Vegetable Market'.
