About this place

Inden is short for Inden leather, also written with a variant character. It is a technique in which deerskin is tanned and dyed and patterns are drawn on it in lacquer, used to make armour and pouches. The name is said to come from its 'transmission from India'. Deer leather and the Japanese people have a long relationship; in the Nara period, leather processing techniques (tanning, smoking, dyeing) advanced, and armour and ornaments made of deer leather were presented as tribute.
