Japanese summers bring mosquitoes, cockroaches, and the small moths that eat wool. The household response is layered — screens, coils, traps, repellents — and much of it has a regulatory basis visitors do not see: many of these products are classified as quasi-drugs.
| Pest | Prevention | Control | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mosquitoes (June–October) | Screens (amido) on every window, no standing water on balconies, fans (mosquitoes are weak fliers) | Mosquito coils (katori senkō), plug-in liquid or mat vaporisers, body repellent (DEET or icaridin) | Repellents are quasi-drugs; concentration limits apply (DEET up to 30% since 2016) |
| Cockroaches | Seal food, wipe grease, empty drain baskets, freeze meat scraps until collection day | Bait stations (poison gel/tablets) under sink and behind fridge; sticky traps | Baits are quasi-drugs; place out of children's reach |
| Clothes moths and carpet beetles | Wash before storing; repellent on top of stored clothes | See the moth-repellent article | Do not mix repellent types |
| Fruit flies / drain flies | Rinse recyclables, dry the sink at night, cover fruit | Drain cleaning; traps | Summer only |
| Ants | Wipe sugar and juice; seal entry gaps | Bait | — |
| Centipedes, giant hornets (rural) | Screens, seal gaps, do not disturb nests | Call the municipality or a specialist for hornet nests | Hornet stings can be dangerous |
[Verify] Classification and DEET limits with MHLW; coil history with the manufacturers' association; municipal hornet-nest services vary.
Cockroaches follow moisture and grease, and come in through drains and gaps regardless. Bait stations placed preventively in May are what Japanese households do; they do not wait to see one.
They burn a low dose of pyrethroid and have been used for over a century; the label says ventilate and keep from infants and pets. Plug-in liquid vaporisers are the smokeless alternative most flats use.
Every window has one, and it stays closed even when the window is open. Balcony doors get a magnetic screen curtain. This is the single most effective measure.
In summer it breeds flies within a day. Rinse containers, wrap meat and fish scraps and freeze them until the collection morning — a widely shared habit.
A mosquito spray, a cockroach spray and a wasp spray have different ingredients, ranges and hazards; using an aerosol near a gas flame or pilot light has caused fires. Read the label; do not spray toward food or a stove.
