Value Village / Before you come to Japan

Half a suitcase of toiletries is unnecessary for Japan — almost everything is sold at any convenience store or drugstore, often in travel sizes, and often better. A few items are genuinely hard to find or different, and those are the ones worth packing.
| Buy here (any drugstore or convenience store) | Japanese label | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Toothbrush, toothpaste | haburashi (歯ブラシ) / hamigakiko (歯磨き粉) | Brushes are small-headed and soft |
| Shampoo, conditioner, body wash | shanpū (シャンプー) / kondishonā (コンディショナー) / bodī sōpu (ボディソープ) | Pump bottles and refill packs; travel sets (トラベルセット) at convenience stores |
| Face wash, cleanser, toner, moisturiser | sengan (洗顔) / kurenjingu (クレンジング) / keshōsui (化粧水) / nyūeki (乳液) | Excellent and cheap (see the skincare names article) |
| Sunscreen | hiyakedome (日焼け止め) | Among the best in the world; see the SPF/PA article |
| Razors, shaving cream | kamisori (カミソリ) / shēbingu (シェービング) | Disposable razors everywhere |
| Sanitary pads | seiriyō napukin (生理用ナプキン) | Wide range; tampons (タンポン) exist but fewer brands, often without applicator |
| Lip balm, hand cream | rippu kurīmu (リップクリーム) / hando kurīmu (ハンドクリーム) | Cheap, good |
| Cotton buds, cotton pads, tissues, wet wipes | menbō (綿棒) / kotton (コットン) / tisshu (ティッシュ) / wetto tisshu (ウェットティッシュ) | Pocket tissues free at stations |
| Contact lens solution | kontakuto senjōeki (コンタクト洗浄液) | Common brands available; your exact brand may not be |
| Pain relief, cold medicine | zutsūyaku (頭痛薬) / kazegusuri (風邪薬) | OTC classes; see that article |
| Worth packing | Why |
|---|---|
| Deodorant / antiperspirant | Japanese products are milder (roll-ons and sprays; few strong sticks). Bring yours if you rely on it |
| Tampons with applicators | Available but limited; pads dominate |
| Specific contact lens solution or medication | Brands differ |
| Large-size shoes/clothes items | See the sizing article |
| Strong-hold hair products for very thick or curly hair | Range is oriented to straight hair |
[Verify] Product availability is observational; tax-free rules with the National Tax Agency.
Everything basic is available, identifiable by shape and picture, and often of higher quality than at home. Pack for your specific needs, not for the category.
It is milder. Sprays and roll-ons dominate, and strong aluminium-based sticks are rare. Bring your own if it matters to you.
Pads are excellent and everywhere; tampons exist (fewer brands, mostly non-applicator). Bring applicator tampons if you prefer them.
Convenience stores are 24 hours and stock travel-size everything. Drugstores close late.
Toiletries count as consumables for tax-free (¥5,000+ same day, sealed until departure under the current rules; the packaging requirement ends 1 November 2026 — see the tax-free article). A drugstore haul of skincare and sunscreen is a common tax-free purchase.
