What are the common misunderstandings about caring for coats?
This answer is a draft. It stays unpublished until legal review and source verification are complete.
Many people dry-clean a coat only once a season, so "how do I look after it in between?" is asked everywhere. In Japan there is a habit of brushing a coat and airing it in the shade after coming home, shared as a way of cutting down on dry-cleaning. Here is how it works.
Everyday care
| When | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| After coming home | Clothes brush, top to bottom, to remove dust. Concentrate on shoulders, collar, cuffs and hem | Dust feeds moths and abrades the fibres |
| Overnight | Air in the shade on a thick hanger (do not put it straight into the wardrobe) | Lets sweat and damp out |
| Rotation | Do not wear the same coat on consecutive days | Lets the fibres recover |
| Rain | Blot with a towel and air in the shade. No hairdryer | Shrinkage, shine |
| End of season | Dry-clean → remove the plastic, use a non-woven cover, moth repellent on top | Leaves no sweat or skin oil behind |
- Shine on wool is fibres flattened by friction reflecting the light. Holding steam just above the surface and lifting the nap with a brush can make it less visible.
- The circle symbols (P, F, W) on the care label show the type of professional cleaning. W is wet cleaning, which cannot be reproduced at home.
[Verify] Check the meaning of the symbols on the Consumer Affairs Agency's "Care labelling" page. The care frequency is general guidance from textile bodies and the dry-cleaning trade.
Misunderstanding 1|More dry-cleaning means cleaner
Repeated dry-cleaning strips the natural oils and the handle of the fabric deteriorates. The general guide is once a season, before putting the coat away. Sweaty areas are managed with brushing and airing.
Misunderstanding 2|Brushing is only for looks
Dust and food crumbs are the main cause of moth damage. Brushing also settles the nap and drives damp out from between the fibres.
Misunderstanding 3|Keep it in the dry-cleaner's plastic
The plastic traps damp and causes mould and discolouration. Remove it and switch to a non-woven cover.
Misunderstanding 4|Removing pills does more harm than good
Left alone, pills spread and pull in the surrounding fibres. Use a pill remover or small scissors and take only the surface (see our article on pilling).
Misunderstanding 5|Down coats do not get dirty, so they need no care
Skin-oil marks at collar and cuffs are just the same on down. Combine spot-washing with a full wash following the label (see our article on washing down).
