World Question Box / Beauty

Do gel nails weaken your natural nails if you keep having them done?

This answer is a draft. It stays unpublished until legal review and source verification are complete.

The answerThe gel itself does not dissolve the nail. The main causes of thin nails are over-filing at each re-application and forcing the gel off. Choose a salon that keeps sanding (filing the nail surface) to a minimum, and never peel the gel off yourself. Every 3–4 months, give the nails a break of 2–4 weeks. If water gets under a gap and the nail turns green, stop and see a dermatologist. If you develop an allergy to the gel ingredients (acrylates), it is hard to go back to gel later, so do not brush off itching or swelling.

Gel nails (jeru neiru) are hugely popular in Japan: they last 3–4 weeks and the colour stays bright. But a steady number of people report "my nails got thinner" or "I got a rash". This article looks at how the nail is built and how to give your nails a rest if you want to keep having gel done.

Basic figures for nails and gel

ItemGuide
How fast fingernails growAbout 0.1 mm a day, about 3 mm a month. Full replacement from root to tip takes about 6 months
Thickness of a healthy nailAbout 0.3–0.5 mm. If over-filing makes it thinner, it bends and can hurt
Interval between re-applications3–4 weeks. Left longer, water gets in through the gap at the base
How to removeSoak in acetone (the ingredient in nail-polish remover) for 10–15 minutes, then lift off gently. Forcing it off peels away layers of the nail plate (the hard surface of the nail)
LampUV or LED lamp. Curing time is 30–60 seconds depending on the product. Some people protect the back of the hand with sunscreen or gloves
Rest periodAfter 3–4 months of gel, a break of 2–4 weeks is a realistic approach
  • Green nails: when a gap opens between gel and nail, water and *Pseudomonas* bacteria get in and the nail turns green. The National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan has received complaints about this. If you see discolouration, remove the gel and go to a dermatology clinic (皮膚科, hifuka — covered by Japanese health insurance). Never paint over it.
  • Acrylate allergy: contact dermatitis from the main gel ingredients (such as HEMA) can appear not only on the fingertips but also on the eyelids and neck. Once sensitised, some people also react to dental materials and medical tape; the Japanese Dermatological Association has warned about this.
  • Doing gel at home: if uncured gel is left on the skin when you switch the lamp on, the risk of sensitisation rises. The golden rule is to wipe off any gel that spills onto the skin before curing.
  • Signs of over-filing: the nail turns white and bends, hurts when pressed, or the tip looks thin and see-through. If any of these apply, take a break.

Misunderstanding 1|Gel dissolves the nail and makes it thin

The main causes of thinning are over-filing and forced removal. Gel itself does not dissolve the nail. It helps to choose a salon that uses a "non-sanding" base gel or a technician who files as little as possible.

Misunderstanding 2|Once it starts lifting, I can pick it off with my nail

The surface of the nail plate comes off with it. Repeated, this visibly thins the nail. Remove with acetone, or at the salon.

Misunderstanding 3|Nails breathe, so they die if you never let them rest

Nails do not breathe (they are fed by the blood supply at the nail root). The point of a rest is to give the filed part time to grow out and to give you a chance to notice any problem with the skin or nail.

Misunderstanding 4|I reacted to one brand, so a different brand will be fine

Acrylate ingredients are common to most gels, so once an allergy has appeared, people often react to other makers' products too. Have a dermatologist identify the ingredient responsible first.

Misunderstanding 5|If it turns green I can hide it with another coat

That seals in the bacteria and makes it worse. For green nails, the first step is to take the gel off and keep the nail dry. Then see a dermatologist for medical care.
