Overview
Backed by the jagged Myogi peaks, its black-lacquered halls carry a density of gilt carving close to Nikko's.
About this place
Myogi Shrine is a shrine in Tomioka, Gunma Prefecture. Its former shrine rank was prefectural shrine. It stands at the eastern foot of Mount Myogi, one of the Three Mountains of Joshu, and is the center of Mount Myogi worship. In the Edo period, located in the northwest of the Kanto Plain, it was deeply revered by successive Tokugawa shoguns, who prayed for eternal family fortune and the prosperity of their descendants, as a guardian of the northwestern (inui) heavenly gate of Edo. In recent years it has also been used as a filming location for the NHK Taiga historical drama.
