About this place
Marugame uchiwa are fans made in Marugame, Kagawa Prefecture. Their origins are said to have three roots. In the Edo period, uchiwa became widespread among ordinary people and were used in many situations of daily life as everyday tools, for cooling, cooking, dressing and fashion, and for chasing fireflies and insects. For mass production, uchiwa production areas were formed throughout Japan. It is handed down that it was devised in 1633 (Kan'ei 10) by Yugen, the head priest of Konkoin, the betto of Kotohira Daigongen.
