A landowner taught himself clockmaking by taking one apart, then built this tower - gears and all - by hand.
About this place
Nora Dokei is a clock tower in Aki, Kochi Prefecture. It was made in the Meiji period and installed at a local landowner's house. Located almost in the center of the Aki Plain and standing in the rural scenery, it is one of Aki's tourist attractions. A National Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Hatanaka Genma, a large landowner of Doi Village (now Doi, Aki), became interested in clocks. Around 1887 (Meiji 20), he ordered an American octagonal wall clock, repeatedly took it apart and reassembled it, and eventually decided to make a clock of his own.
