About this place
Yamachosuji is the name of a townscape in central Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, where many traditional buildings remain. "Yamacho" refers to the ten merchant towns that developed along the old Hokurikudo road in the castle town of Takaoka and own the "Mikuruma-yama" floats of the Takaoka Mikuruma-yama Festival. The Mikuruma-yama are floats made from the imperial carriages used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, given to the townspeople by Maeda Toshinaga and embellished by each town. After a great fire in the Meiji era destroyed most of the town, fireproof buildings in the storehouse style were built under Toyama Prefecture's regulations, and many remain today.
