Overview
Rather than sealing the river, the levee is deliberately gapped to let water escape - engineering doctrine as landscape.
About this place
The Shingen Embankment is an embankment in Ryuo, Kai, Yamanashi Prefecture. However, the name Shingen Embankment is sometimes used not only for the embankment itself but for the whole comprehensive flood-control system, including flood-control structures such as the Shingen Embankment, Hijiri-ushi and Shogigashira. Note that although the structures of the flood-control system include the staggered levee (ganko), which is sometimes explained and introduced as a steep-river-type kasumi-tei (open levee), the Shingen Embankment itself is not a kasumi-tei. It is said to have been built in the Sengoku period by Takeda Shingen (Harunobu), the protector (shugo) of Kai and a Sengoku daimyo.
