About this place
Takaosan Yakuoin is a temple on Mount Takao in Hachioji, Tokyo. It is one of the three great head temples of the Kanto region of the Shingon sect Chizan school. Its formal temple name is Takaosan Yakuoin Yukiji, but it is generally called "Takaosan" or "Takaosan Yakuoin". Yakuoin and the cedar-lined approach are selected among the Hachioji Eighty-Eight Views. It is said to have been opened in 744 (Tenpyo 16) by Gyoki Bosatsu as a prayer temple to protect the eastern lands, by order of Emperor Shomu. Because Yakushi Nyorai was enshrined as the principal image at that time, it is called Yakuoin.
