About this place
Shinjiko Nature Museum Gobius is a hands-on learning aquarium in Izumo, Shimane Prefecture, exhibiting freshwater and brackish-water creatures. Opened April 21, 2001. A member of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It exhibits about 200 species and about 10,000 specimens of creatures living in the rivers of Shimane Prefecture and in Lake Shinji and Nakaumi. In 2002 it received the 22nd Green City Award, Chairman's Encouragement Prize, Facility Greening category. 'Gobius' is a Latin word for small fish such as gobies, and is also used in the scientific names of fish of the goby family.
