About this place
Echizen washi is Japanese paper made in the Imadate district (formerly Imadate-cho) of Echizen, Fukui Prefecture. It continues to be produced as Japan's number-one washi-producing area in quality, variety and volume. Echizen hosho and Echizen torinoko paper are designated Important Intangible Cultural Properties. On December 11, 2025 (Reiwa 7), Echizen torinoko paper was also added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage listing for "Washi."
