Fine hair around the eyebrows, above the lip, on the cheeks. In Japan, women have shaved their faces with a razor for generations, and "ladies' shaving" at barber shops is an established service — something that surprises many visitors. You will hear all sorts of claims: "shaving makes hair grow back thicker", "make-up sits better afterwards". Here we look at what it does to the skin and, if you do shave, how to do it.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Does hair grow back thicker? | No. Thickness and number of hairs are decided at the root, and shaving does not change them. After shaving, the cut end is flat, so the hair looks thicker, and the tip is no longer rounded, so it feels prickly — that is all |
| Effect on the skin | A razor removes part of the stratum corneum (dead skin cells) along with the hair. Over-shaving or shaving too often causes dryness, redness and stinging. At a sensible frequency, some people feel that "the old dead cells come off and make-up sits better" |
| Frequency | Once every 2–3 weeks as a guide. Weekly or more is too hard on the stratum corneum |
| Tools | A guarded face razor (L-shaped, 顔用カミソリ, sold at any drugstore such as Matsumoto Kiyoshi or Welcia) or an electric shaver for the face. Body T-razors have sharp blades and are unsuitable. Replace the blade after 3–5 uses |
| Steps | ① Wash your face so it is clean ② Apply shaving foam or soap lather (never shave dry skin) ③ One direction, along the hair growth, light pressure ④ Rinse with lukewarm water ⑤ Moisturise well with toner (化粧水) and lotion (乳液) ⑥ Sunscreen during the day |
| Skin to avoid | Acne, eczema, fresh sunburn, just after a peel. Do not shave over moles or warts |
| Time of day | Evening is safest (freshly shaved skin is vulnerable to UV and cosmetics sting more easily) |
[Verify] "Shaving does not make hair thicker" is a standard dermatological explanation; check the relevant section of the Japanese Dermatological Association Q&A. Barber-shop shaving prices are a guide only.
Hair thickness is decided at the root and shaving does not change it. The flat cut end only looks thicker, and it returns to normal as it grows.
Weekly or more removes too much of the stratum corneum and causes dryness and redness. Once every 2–3 weeks is enough.
Body T-razors have sharp blades and are unsuitable for thin facial skin. Use a guarded face razor or an electric shaver.
A blade on dry skin scrapes off the stratum corneum and causes stinging. Always use lather.
Freshly shaved skin has a weakened barrier and needs moisturiser and sunscreen. They prevent dryness, redness and dark spots.
