The Shinkansen is the backbone of a Japan trip and its ticketing is where visitors lose the most money — either by buying a rail pass that no longer pays off, or by not knowing that a ticket is two tickets and a seat is three kinds.

Since October 2023 it rarely does for a standard Tokyo–Kansai trip. Price out your actual legs; regional passes cover most itineraries for less.
A Shinkansen journey is base fare + limited-express surcharge, sometimes printed as two tickets — insert both into the gate together. Online tickets on an IC card avoid this.
Unreserved cars have seats; you just are not assigned one. Off-peak, you will sit. Peak periods and Friday evenings, reserve.
Ticket machines have English, and online booking (Smart EX, eki-net) is faster with QR or IC boarding. Counters are for passes and complex routes.
Since 2023 the Nozomi and Mizuho are usable with the JR Pass for a supplement; the Hikari takes only about 30 minutes longer to Kyoto and is included free.
