Value Village / Before you come to Japan
This answer is a draft. It stays unpublished until legal review and source verification are complete.
This article covers the rest of the label. For what SPF and PA mean, see #84.
SPF and PA values are measured, under international test methods, with 2 mg (or 2 μL) of product per cm² of skin. Surveys of actual use report people applying around a quarter to a half of the recommended amount. The guide for a whole face is 0.7–0.9 g: two pearl-sized dabs of cream, or two one-yen-coin circles of liquid.
A high rating applied thinly does not behave like a high rating.
[Verify] The 2 mg/cm² standard is widely documented; actual-use figures come from dermatology and cosmetics information sites. Confirm with Japan Cosmetic Industry Association material before publication.
Amount and reapplication advice are printed on the product. The stated performance assumes the stated amount.
Water-resistance claims are tested under defined conditions. Towelling and rubbing still remove product.
Some products require a specific cleanser. The removal method is part of the instructions.
Front-of-pack English is common; usage and warnings are usually Japanese only. Translate the back before use.
Once opened, use products up within a reasonable period. Follow the instructions on the product.
