Value Village

Kyoto travel guide

Take your time with culture.

Planning tips

  • Narrow down the temples and shrines you want to visit, and check visiting hours and routes before deciding the order.
  • If you are interested in crafts, plan separate time for learning about the works and for visiting workshops and shops.
  • For photography and worship, follow on-site guidance first, and be considerate of daily life in the neighborhood.

These are planning tips from our editors. They do not replace checking the latest opening hours, transport and prices yourself.

Fushimi Inari Taisha

Every one of the thousand torii was dedicated by a worshipper. The donor's name and the date are carved on the back of each post. That view was not designed; it is what prayers look like when they pile up. The deity began as a god of rice, and later drew the faith of merchants as a god of business.
