The seat and elbows of my suit or uniform have gone shiny. Can it be fixed? Prevented?
This answer is a draft. It stays unpublished until legal review and source verification are complete.
Sit at a desk all day and the seat, elbows and knees of a suit start to shine. This "shine" (テカリ, tekari) is the surface nap pressed flat so that it reflects light, and for Japan's office suits and school uniforms it is an unavoidable nuisance. Here is what can be reversed, and how to slow it down.
Stages of shine and what to do
| Stage | Condition | What to do | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early | A slight shine at some angles. The cloth is still thick | Steam (hold above the cloth, steam only) → clothes brush to lift the nap | Yes |
| Middle | Always shiny. Smooth to the touch | Mist with diluted vinegar (1 water : 1–2 vinegar) → brush → steam. Or ammonia water (a few drops in water). Light ironing on low with a pressing cloth can make it worse, so steam only | Largely |
| Late | The cloth is thin and see-through, and looks faded | The fibres are worn away and will not recover. A dry cleaner's "shine removal" (テカリ直し) (a nap-raising process, ¥1,000–3,000) for a temporary fix | No |
Preventing it
| Measure | Details |
|---|---|
| Do not wear on consecutive days | Rotate 2–3 suits; rest a suit for 1–2 days after each wear. Wool fibres recover when rested |
| How you sit | Sweep the jacket tails aside before sitting; do not sit on them (shine and creasing on the back); pinch up the trouser knees slightly as you sit; no wallet or phone in the back pocket (friction and distortion) |
| Chair | Synthetic leather and hard seats cause more friction. Use a fabric cushion or seat cover. Same for car seats |
| Daily care | Clothes brush after coming home (along the nap); hang trousers on a trouser hanger; steam once a week |
| Fabric choice | All-wool cloth recovers; polyester blends shine more easily. Tightly woven cloths (serge, gabardine) shine easily; flannel and tweed show it less |
| Two pairs of trousers | Trousers wear out before the jacket. Buy a two-trouser suit, or from a shop that sells extra trousers in the same cloth |
| Uniforms | School uniforms (wool-polyester blends) shine especially easily. Keep a spare pair of trousers or skirt; brush after school. Iron on low with a pressing cloth |
- Why it shines: friction → nap lies flat → surface becomes smooth → reflects light in one direction. Heat and pressure (over-ironing, sitting) speed it up. Polyester melts slightly under heat and sets, so it is harder to reverse.
- How to steam: hold a garment steamer, or the iron's steam, 2–3 cm above the cloth, let the steam soak in without touching the fabric → brush the nap up straight away → hang to dry. Ironing directly with a pressing cloth flattens it further, so avoid that.
- The vinegar method: water and vinegar (grain vinegar, 穀物酢) at 1:1 to 1:2, test for colour fastness somewhere hidden, mist → leave a few minutes → brush → steam → dry in the shade. The smell goes once dry. Ammonia water does the same job (ventilate).
- Dry cleaners: some offer "shine removal" (テカリ直し) or "nap raising" (毛羽起こし) as an option. Pressing worsens shine, so ask for "a light press only" and say the shine bothers you.
- When to replace: late-stage shine, see-through cloth, a split seat seam. A suit worn 2–3 times a week lasts about 3–5 years.
[Verify] Nap-raising with vinegar or ammonia is a method passed down in the dry-cleaning trade and in homes; its effect on cloth varies by fibre. Check against materials from the national federation of dry-cleaning associations (Zenkuren).
Misunderstanding 1|Shine is dirt, so washing will get rid of it
It is a physical state — flattened nap — and washing does not reverse it. Lift it with steam and a brush.
Misunderstanding 2|A good hard ironing makes shine disappear
Heat and pressure are the biggest cause of shine. Steam from above, then brush.
Misunderstanding 3|Wearing the same suit every day is fine
Daily wear robs the fibres of time to recover. Rotating 2–3 suits adds years to their life.
Misunderstanding 4|Late-stage shine can be fixed too
Once the fibres are worn thin it will not come back. The cleaner's process is temporary. Buy extra trousers.
Misunderstanding 5|Polyester blends are tougher, so they don't shine
In polyester blends the nap is set by heat, so they shine easily and recover poorly. All-wool cloth has more recovery.
