About this place
Miyajima-zaiku is woodwork made in Miyajimacho, Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is designated a traditional craft of Hiroshima Prefecture. It is also designated a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. Miyajima-zaiku developed because the Hatsukaichi district was a timber collection point and because forest resources are abundant near the prefectural border. The types are wide-ranging, including rice paddles, lathe work, hollowed-out (kurimono) work and Miyajima carving.
