About this place
Honnonji is a head temple (historic temple) of the Nichiren sect in Minobu, Minamikoma District, Yamanashi. Its mountain name is Onozan. Its founder was Shinshoin Nichion, who had retired from Kuonji on Mount Minobu, the head temple; it was founded in 1609 (14th year of Keicho) with the devotion of Yojuin Oman no Kata, a concubine of Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is also called 'Oman-sama's temple'. It belongs to the Konishi lineage. The chief priest is the 66th, Takasa Nichizui. Its main hall and bell tower are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The subtemple Ryoenji stands in the precinct.
