Gunkanjima
An island that flourished on coal and then emptied. Part of the World Cultural Heritage Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution.

Oura Tenshudo
The oldest surviving Christian building in Japan, and a National Treasure. In 1865 hidden Christians declared their faith to a priest here, an event known as the Discovery of the Believers. For two hundred and fifty years the faith had been passed on without a single priest.

Half of its second torii was blown away by the atomic bomb, and the remaining half still stands. Called the one-legged torii, it was preserved rather than removed.
