How should I wash bras and underwear so they last? When should I replace them?
This answer is a draft. It stays unpublished until legal review and source verification are complete.
Underwear is worn every day, yet its care tends to come last. A bra thrown straight into the machine and its wire bent, elastic that has gone slack, yellowing — all common failures. Here is how to wash underwear, and its surprisingly short lifespan. Where a Japanese product name helps you find it in a shop, we give it.
How to wash
| Item | Washing | Drying | Never |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bra (underwired) | Fasten the hooks (so they do not snag other clothes) → bra net (3D type, ブラジャー用ネット) (1–2 bras at most) → gentle / delicates cycle, neutral detergent → spin 30 seconds to 1 minute. Hand-wash: press gently below 30°C; do not knead the cups | Shape the cups, peg by the band and hang upside down, or dry flat. Hanging by the straps stretches the elastic. In the shade | Tumble dryer (distorts elastic, wires and cups); loose in a normal cycle (wires bend or poke out); hot water; chlorine bleach |
| Non-wired bras, bra tops | Net, gentle cycle | Dry flat | Tumble dryer |
| Knickers | Normal cycle in a net is fine (stops tangling and stretching). Pre-rinse menstrual blood and discharge in cold water (hot water sets the protein) | In the shade (sunlight degrades fabric and elastic and fades colour) | Chlorine bleach (colours and patterns) |
| Socks | Turn inside out, in a net (skin oil and dead skin are on the inside); normal cycle | Peg with the toes up (so water does not pool in the elastic) | — |
| Shapewear, girdles | Hand-wash or gentle cycle, net | Dry flat | Tumble dryer, heat |
| Silk and lace underwear | Hand-wash, neutral detergent, below 30°C | Shade; dry flat | Machine spin, sunlight |
How long they last
| Item | Guide | Signs to replace |
|---|---|---|
| Bra | Worn 2–3 times a week: 6 months to 1 year (around 100 wears) | Band elastic stretched so the back rides up; cups gape or collapse; wires poke out or dig in; straps loose even at the shortest setting; fabric worn thin |
| Knickers | 6 months to 1 year | Loose elastic, thin fabric, yellowing or stains that will not come out |
| Socks | When the heel wears thin (a few months to a year) | See-through, stretched elastic, holes |
| Undershirts / base layers | 1–2 years | Stretched, yellowed, smelly |
- Yellowing: oxidised skin oil and sweat. Dissolve oxygen bleach (酸素系漂白剤, sanso-kei hyōhakuzai) in 40°C water and soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour → wash (after a colour test). Chlorine bleach damages fabric and elastic, so do not use it. Washing straight after wearing is the prevention.
- Odour: not fully dried, or built-up skin oil. Dry thoroughly, soak in oxygen bleach, and if the label allows around 60°C, wash hot.
- Re-check your size: bust size changes with weight, age, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Try on and measure once a year. An ill-fitting bra is generally described as a cause of shoulder stiffness and loss of shape.
- Rotation: rotating 5–7 bras reduces the load on each one and rests the elastic. Do not wear the same bra on consecutive days.
- Storage: do not crush the cups (stack them or stand them up); fasten the hooks.
- Children and juniors: during growth, check the size every 3–6 months.
- Care labels: underwear has care labels too. Check for "hand wash", "machine wash gentle" and "do not bleach".
[Verify] Bra lifespan (number of wears) is a guideline based on guidance from lingerie makers. Check how to read care labels against Consumer Affairs Agency materials.
Misunderstanding 1|Bras can go straight into the washing machine
Wires bend or poke out, cups distort, and they tangle with other clothes. Fasten the hooks and use a bra net.
Misunderstanding 2|Tumble-drying underwear is hygienic and quick
Heat distorts the elastic, wires and cups and cuts the lifespan sharply. Dry in the shade or flat.
Misunderstanding 3|A bra lasts for years
The guide is around 100 wears, or 6 months to a year at 2–3 wears a week. A band that rides up or cups that gape mean it is time to replace.
Misunderstanding 4|Use chlorine bleach to get rid of yellowing
It damages fabric and elastic. Soak in oxygen bleach at 40°C. Prevention is washing straight after wearing.
Misunderstanding 5|Once the size fits, it never changes
It changes with weight, age and pregnancy. Try on and measure once a year.
