World Question Box / Beauty

In what order should I do my evening skincare?

This answer is a draft. It stays unpublished until legal review and source verification are complete.

The answerThe basic pattern is "makeup remover (クレンジング, kurenjingu) → face wash (洗顔, sengan) → lotion (化粧水, keshōsui) → emulsion (乳液, nyūeki)". What marks out the evening is the "take off" step, and whether you need it depends on what you put on your face that day.

Evening routines tend to gain extra steps, and that is where most of the arguments about order gather. Japanese skincare follows a fairly fixed sequence, and products in a Japanese drugstore (Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Welcia, etc.) are labelled by their role in it. Here is the basic order and the reasoning behind each step.

The basic sequence, and the basis for each step

StepStageBasis / guide
1Take off (makeup remover — oil, balm or milk)Removes oil-based dirt (makeup, sunscreen). Not essential on a day you used neither
2Wash (face wash)The Japanese Dermatological Association guideline gives twice a day as the guide for face washing. Four times a day is over-washing
3The water-rich product (lotion, 化粧水)Gives water to the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin)
4The oil-rich product (emulsion, 乳液)Forms a film on the skin surface and limits transepidermal water loss (water evaporating out through the skin)

This sequence is presented as Japanese Dermatological Association information on several medical-clinic websites.

[Verify] Confirm the source of the sequence and the "twice a day" recommendation in the Japanese Dermatological Association's primary documents.

Misunderstanding 1|The take-off step is essential every day

Makeup removers are made for oil-based dirt. On a day you used neither sunscreen nor makeup, there is no need to use something of the same strength.

Misunderstanding 2|The longer you spend, the better it works

The longer a product is worked over the skin, the more friction the skin takes. Keep to the time and amount on the product label.

Misunderstanding 3|"No double cleansing needed" means never use a face wash

"No double cleansing needed" (W洗顔不要, daburu sengan fuyō) is a statement about how that product is designed. Depending on the sunscreen you used and the state of your skin, a face wash may still suit you better.

Misunderstanding 4|You need the same number of products as in the morning

More steps at night, fewer in the morning — or the other way round: there is no rule. Under Japanese law the claims a cosmetic may make are limited to a list of 56 items, and "more steps means more effect" is not among them.
