World Question Box / Health

What do people get wrong about swollen legs and feet?

This answer is a draft. It stays unpublished until legal review and source verification are complete.

The answerThe biggest misunderstanding is "drink less and the swelling will ease". Restricting fluids is not necessarily appropriate. What does matter is that swelling on one side only, swelling that appears suddenly, or swelling with breathlessness is a reason to see a doctor.

Heavy, puffy legs by evening are a shared experience everywhere, and in Japan the word for it, *mukumi* (むくみ), is part of everyday conversation. Most of it is nothing to worry about. But there are patterns that must not be missed, and knowing them matters wherever you live.

Swelling not to worry about, and swelling to see a doctor about

TypeDetails
TemporaryLong periods in the same position (standing or sitting for work), a cold body. Blood flow slows and it happens to anyone. Basically nothing to worry about
See a doctorOnly one leg / appeared suddenly / comes with shortness of breath, breathlessness when lying down, or weight gain over a few days / has not gone down by morning

Swelling in one leg only is generally described as possibly involving a clot or a vein or lymph problem; in both legs with breathlessness, the heart; in the face or the whole body, the kidneys.

[Verify] The above is based on explanations from several internal-medicine and cardiology clinics. Before publication, confirm with medical review or academic-society material.

Misunderstanding 1|Drinking water causes swelling

Cutting back on the fluids you need is not recommended. Other factors, such as how much salt you eat, are also involved. Do not restrict fluids on your own judgement.

Misunderstanding 2|Only people who stand all day get it

Sitting for long periods causes it too. What matters is how long you stay still.

Misunderstanding 3|A hard massage will get rid of it

Strong pressure can put a load on the tissue. Avoid any force that causes pain.

Misunderstanding 4|A night's sleep always resets it

It usually goes down overnight, but if it does not, another factor may be involved.

Misunderstanding 5|Leave it alone and it is nothing to worry about

If even one item in the "See a doctor" row above applies to you, do not judge for yourself. See a doctor.
