Hakone marquetry makes use of the rich variety of tree species in the Hakone mountains, creating geometric patterns with the natural colors of the wood itself rather than paint. Said to have begun in Hakone Hatajuku in the late Edo period, it was designated a national traditional craft in 1984. This is the final article in our Kanto series.
